DNP essential II. Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking

In this essential I have learned how to assess organizations, identify system’s issues, create a non-profit organization and facilitate organizational as well as global changes. I have developed educational training as well as provided a budget for providers to sustain the change in practice. A SWOT analysis for the implementation of my project was created. The SWOT allowed me to engage with stakeholders and show how much impact this change in practice would bring to our communities.  I was able to assess that primary and free clinics would be the best sites for the education and implementation of the device.  Of course, a plan of action for dissemination was developed.

Reflections

Through this essential I have been able to utilize organizational theory in developing understanding of how best to achieve excellent patient outcomes.  Systems analysis is performed in order to assess current health care practices and health care organizations.  By making appropriate changes, the delivery of cost-effective, quality care both now and in the future can be provided to my patients.  Utilizing organizational management skills, I serve as a Nurse executive, the highest clinical ladder achievement at Adventist Fort Washington Medical Center.  In regard to organizational issues, I have created an Advanced Practice Nursing Council at FWHC and assisted in credentialing nurse practitioners into our organization.   I have continued to pursue the advancement of the nursing profession by collaborating with other Adventist Healthcare facilities  in the writing of a position statement on the use of the title "provider" at FWHC. I serve on the Observation Project Team where we evaluate 23 hour observations and the barriers that are keeping them from being discharged in a timely manner. The hiring of NP’s in our organization has contributed to the quadruple aim to reduce cost.
